THE HOTTEST GIGS OF THE SUMMER ARE ON THE WAY! A blistering array of the UK's finest Latin jazz artists is set to create a musical heatwave over four nights in the heart of Soho, from Thursday 19th Sunday 22nd September.
Over four extraordinary concerts, the London Latin Jazz Fest brings together the cream of the UK's musical talents in that most intimate of settings, the Jazz Club Soho,10 Dean Street, W1.
Every night, the festival presents icons of the UK scene Alex Wilson; Snowboy & the Latin Section and Roberto Pla & his Latin Ensemble. This is the only opportunity this summer to hear these artists and get up close to the unique character and flavour of their music.
Each concert is introduced by the festival's curator - Latin jazz pianist, arranger and composer
Alex Wilson, who performs at each of four concerts.
Derbyshire-born Wilson is one of the UK Latin Jazz scene's foremost artists whose driving passion is the piano. Wilson has an authentic command of Latin American and Caribbean rhythms, an unquenchable appetite for stripping back this music to its African roots and fearlessly explores of the welter of world rhythms. Alex Wilson is a giant talent and his music is endlessly satisfying.
On Thursday 19th September, the festival opens with an explosive Latin jazz concert, fuelled by Roberto Pla and his 10-piece Latin Ensemble. Colombian-born Pla is widely regarded as the father of live Latin jazz and salsa in the UK and one of the most charismatic and respected bandleaders and musicians around. Pla's Latin Ensemble features a roll call of the UK's most gifted musicians and vocalists. Alex Wilson hosts the evening and also guests at the concert.
On Friday 20th September, Alex Wilson's London Latin Jazz Fest Quintet
A special group of virtuosos, hand picked by Wilson exclusively for the festival, offers music lovers a unique listening experience. Line-up: Wilson on piano; Renι Alvarez on trombone and vocals, trumpeter Shanti Paul Jayasinha , Venezuelan percussion maestro Edwin Sanz and long-time collaborator Davide Mantovani on bass.
On Saturday 21st September, two grand pianos and two masters of the instrument take
centre-stage. For the first time, Alex Wilson and Jason Rebello combine their ferocious talents to take the Latin jazz piano to the limit. Rebello a classically trained pianist who switched to jazz at 16 when heard Herbie Hancock was part of Sting's live and recording group for six years.
On Sunday 22nd September, Snowboy and the Latin Section deliver the Fest's raucous finale, with an ever defiant Latin punch. Led by multi-percussionist Mark 'Snowboy' Cotgrove, this crew are Europe's leading Afro-Cuban Jazz performers and recording artists. Snowboy currently touring with Lisa Stansfield may look like a teddy boy with his trademark quiff and drainpipe trousers, but his hands and heart are 100 per cent African.
Commenting on the launch of the festival in future years, planned to run over venues across the capital - curator Alex Wilson says: "You can't consider Latin jazz in London without including Roberto Pla and Snowboy. Both were key to my musical development at the beginning of my career they gave me the 'breaks' I needed. I jumped at the chance of showcasing their talents, alongside the finest practitioners of Latin jazz in the UK."
